Before each light, trim the wick to about a quarter inch. This prevents mushrooming, keeps the flame steady, and helps the candle burn cleaner and longer.

Soy wax has a memory — on the first burn, let it melt all the way across the top. This helps it burn evenly and prevents tunneling down the middle in future lights.

Keep your candle away from open windows, fans, and air vents. Drafts make the flame dance, cause uneven burning, and can create soot on the glass.

Don't leave a candle burning unattended for hours on end. Give it breaks between burns — this keeps the wick healthy and the fragrance fresh throughout the candle's life.

When it's time to put out the flame, use a candle snuffer rather than blowing it out. This keeps the wick in good shape and prevents hot wax splatter.
